What Causes a Pipe to Leak?

Do you have a leaking pipe but can’t figure out the cause? Our engineers can assess and fix your leak and will find a long-term solution to prevent future problems. Some of the most common causes of leaking pipes include unregulated water pressure, fluctuating temperatures, damaged joints or broken seals.

Clogged Pipe

If you leave a blockage for too long, it will build up until there is nowhere for the wastewater to pass through when you use your dishwasher, take a shower or flush the toilet. Unfortunately, the water has to go somewhere, which means the pressure inside your pipe will build up until it inevitably bursts and causes a leak.

Excessive Water Pressure

If your water pressure is too high, pipes can crack and leak. If you don’t yet have a leak but notice your water pressure shifting, you should call us to investigate and save you more trouble at a later date.

Change in Temperature

As the seasons change, so does the temperature within your pipes. In winter, pipes regularly burst due to freezing conditions. When pipes freeze, they often contract, and when water runs through them, the expansion can lead to leaks.

Pipe Corrosion or Damage

If your pipes are getting old and rusty, damage or corrosion to your pipes is a leading cause of leaks, particularly in properties with an irregular or non-existent maintenance schedule.

During installation, seals are placed around all water connectors, but if your pipework was installed a long time ago, these seals might have succumbed to wear and tear. If you notice puddles near your toilet, dishwasher or other appliance, you may have a broken seal.
