Some homes and businesses are not connected to the main sewer pipe lines that run across the UK. These homes and businesses are often older or in remote locations. The houses will instead be connected to a septic tank, cesspit or sewage treatment plant.
How does a septic tank work?
The pipes that run from your toilets will take the waste all the way to your septic tank. Within the septic tank the solids are broken down by a process which involves bacteria and then periodically the tank is emptied. Usually a soakaway is installed beyond the tank and it’ll take the purified excess water to an overflow pipe. From the overflow pipe it goes into the surrounding soil while the remainder of waste deposit will be the sludge.

Cesspits
Emptying, Maintenance & Installation
If you live off the beaten track and are not connected to the mains then you’ll need some sort of tank to store your waste. You could choose a sewage treatment plant, septic tank or cesspit. Cesspits unlike sewage treatment plants and septic tanks don’t treat the waste they just hold it.
At Daily Drains, we have experience of installing the tanks as well as maintaining them. We can have it tailor made specific to your needs and just right for your property.
Installation
In terms of efficiency cesspits come quite low down the pecking order. Septic tanks and sewage treatment plants being are usually the go to for those that live off the grid. Cesspits can become costly having them frequently emptied. Occasionally there is no choice but to have a cesspit with other options just not being feasible.
The installation consists of a cylindrical chamber which is around 1 metre in diameter. The chamber is placed either 2 to 3 meters beneath the ground. The tanks will hold waste for approximately 45 days. They can be fitted with an alarm to alert you as to when it is becoming full.
Maintenance
Once the cesspit has been emptied we can conduct any repairs needed inside. With our high pressure jetter’s we can also flush out the pipes leading to the cesspit. The pipes do have a knack of becoming blocked a little more regularly than those feeding into the main sewers.
